Case Study_ Cannabis & Restorative Justice
Context_ As of January 2020, marijuana has been legalized for recreational use in eleven states, inspiring restorative justice initiatives that include expungement and social equity programs. With sales totaling $10.8 Billion in 2018 and less than 10% Black & Latino ownership, these efforts are falling short.
Creative Brief_ How do we create a just cannabis industry and ensure racism is eradicated before it does more harm? We will look at the intersection of inclusivity, equity and advocacy within the emerging American cannabis industry and identifies solutions harnessing media and culture.
At Dreams Uncaged, Kindred’s 2019 Quest on Justice Reform, a diverse panel of experts analyzed the complexities of the American Justice system. Attendees spanned arts, politics, activism and more, including advocate Topeka Sam, artist Brandon Breaux, wrongfully imprisoned exoneree Patrick Pursley and one of the attorneys linked to Kim Kardashian's prison reform efforts, MiAngel Cody.
Partners included the ACLU, Ben & Jerry’s, Defy Ventures and The Sentencing Project. The event was featured as part of ComplexCon's Community Week.
